To me, life is not only about getting to be happy anyhow. There is a kind of happiness that can occur regardless of you being aware or not of your purposes in life, by just focusing on liking what you got so far and disregarding the others' struggles, as if nothing else could be done from your side. But happiness can also occur after your purpose in life instincts wake up, you design a feasible path to get there, you get to be on track, and finally you feel that each step gets you closer. When addressing these purposes demands personal growth / development to achieve such challenge, effort and pain may be required, but it can be rewarding and fulfilling in the long term, as the proud of having forged your identity by yourself makes your inner emotions be fulfilled and connected to your root purpose in life, arising this way your inner peace. To me, happines is not built through an eternal seek of emotions from outside that fill your inner emptiness. It is built finding your inner peace and growing it until it burst the social clichés installed in your mental software and projects outwards, even to the extent of shedding light on others' darkness.
